FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who qualifies for nonemergency medical transportation under MHCP?

Individuals enrolled in Medical Assistance (MA), Emergency Medical Assistance (EMA), Refugee Medical Assistance (RMA), the Minnesota Family Planning Program (MFPP), or pregnant individuals and youth under 19 enrolled in MinnesotaCare are eligible for NEMT. Some institutionalized individuals and those under managed care organizations may also qualify.

NEMT includes various transport modes such as personal mileage (Mode 1), volunteer drivers (Mode 2), unassisted public transit or taxis (Mode 3), assisted transport (Mode 4), wheelchair-accessible vehicles (Mode 5), protected transport (Mode 6), and stretcher transport (Mode 7). The mode used depends on medical necessity.

Yes, MHCP allows a responsible person to accompany the member when necessary. This could be a family member, legal guardian, or authorized representative. Their transportation is included in the reimbursement when traveling with the member.

Transportation is typically covered within 30 miles for primary care and 60 miles for specialty care. If the member and appointment locations are within ¾ mile of public transit routes, public transportation must be used when medically appropriate.

Cancellations made at least 24 hours in advance are free of charge. For same-day cancellations, a fee may apply depending on the circumstances.

Yes, all our drivers undergo training in handling non-emergency medical transport, assisting passengers with mobility challenges, and ensuring safe and comfortable rides.
